Picasa Picasa Rating: 3 of 5 2 months ago Picasa is easy to use, but its way of organizing the pictures is a constant source of confusion.
Windows Defender Windows Defender Rating: 3 of 5 3 months ago Before trying Microsoft Security Essentials I had it running in all of my windows configurations - can't say it ever caught anything. It pretty much stayed out of the way, only to receive any attention when some program modified an essential setting or placed itself in the bash of "early starters" wich was nice to know if you didn't expect it.
Apple Software Update Apple Software Update Rating: 4 of 5 3 months ago Does what it is supposed to!
Firefox Firefox Rating: 5 of 5 3 months ago Has been my browser of choice in all operating systems since before it was named firefox - the only drag is the overwhelming number of add-ons wich tends to slow your browsing experience down when you add your 20th "absolutely necessary extension"
Excelsior Installer Excelsior Installer Rating: 4 of 5 3 months ago A bit slow, but very easy to use. Especially if you've got a program with no installer and want it installed along all your other applications - right click folder with program stuff choose excelcior>"build and run" and you're done.
DVD Shrink DVD Shrink Rating: 3 of 5 3 months ago Easy to use, reasonably fast and works in a majority of cases
Defraggler Defraggler Rating: 4 of 5 3 months ago Simple interface, reasonable speed, Sufficient number of settings, all you need in a defragmentation application
WizMouse WizMouse Rating: 4 of 5 4 months ago If you are used to how ubuntu treats off-window scrolls this program is a perfect mimic
Locate Locate Rating: 4 of 5 4 months ago If you frequently need swift location of a file on your system, but you only have partial recollection of file names - this program is a must!

More info: I have dealt with computers since 1978 (not all of the time but a lot of the time). All of my favorite programs are, with a few exceptions, free (preferably open source) - yes, that implies that I work a lot in Linux (Ubuntu at the moment) a lot of the time. I prefer β-versions - when software matures it gets boring and predictable. I guess, that's what people in general like about “final versions.” I find browsers like Firefox and Chromium (the backbone of Google Chrome) fascinating, because you get to watch them in the making. I know, most people have serious agendas when it comes to their choice of software - well, I'm not serious, and what I look for in a piece of software is more in line with what I find intriguing in a novel or a movie: “make it new - surprise me”
