This is an excellent simple search program - but for one serious problem: it has too small a limit on the length of pathname that it can handle in its searches - with the result that its report list fills up with error messages because it couldn't search many of the folders on my C drive because of their long pathnames. I'm now kicking it off my system and using instead the excellent file / folder search facility in Free Commander - in my experience the best Windows file manager by far. |

Eudora |

Although there are no doubt various points that could be improved, Eudora has proved over the years to be by far the most feature-packed, flexible and intuitive e-mail program that I've come across. Unfortunately version 7.1.0.9 is the final version of the true Eudora, because the so-called Eudora 8 is not Eudora at all but the much inferior Thunderbird dressed up to look rather like Eudora. I've tried the so-called Eudora 8 beta, and promptly kicked it off my system as a serious backward step as compared with Eudora 7.1.0.9. Eudora 8 would need to have major advances in its functionality and intuitiveness of its facilities before I would even consider looking at it again, and meanwhile Eudora 7.1 rules, okay! |

MailWasher Pro |

A truly great security layer for e-mail to my system - I've been using it from its early days and still wouldn't be without it. For me, it's intuitive to use, but my real grouse has been its inability to import my accounts from Eudora 6.3 (it is actually supposed to be able to do that), and every time I've done a clean reinstall of my C drive I've had to enter all the relevant e-mail accounts manually. |

Integrio Uptime Scout |

A very neat and simple system tray utility that checks the 'up' or 'down' status of a user specified list of websites, immediately giving an alert if any of the listed sites appear to be 'down'. My only little niggle in Windows 7 is that on Windows startup (or login) Uptime Scout's window comes up, so that you have to dismiss it, and there's nothing in its configuration options to make it start up minimized to the system tray / notification area. In Vista it was starting up minimized in the system tray.
Couldn't find any other free utility that had this functionality (that is, including the alerts), so despite my little Win7 niggle I recommend this utility. |

Internet Explorer |

I don't doubt that IE 8 has oodles of great points, BUT from my own viewpoint as a website developer it's HOPELESS. Microsoft software developers seem just NEVER to learn, and still produce a browser that is quirky and outright buggy in its rendering of quite basic styling commands, and still doesn't recognise certain web design standards that are recognised by other modern browsers, and which present day website developers use to make their pages clearer and more pleasant to view. For the most part Firefox, Opera and Safari get these things right, but for some reason our 'great' software giant MS fluffs it with every version. |

Walyk Wallpaper Changer |

Gives all the options that I require (most wallpaper changers don't), and operates intuitively, with no problems - a nice piece of work. I have the program monitor my wallpaper folder for changes, and load a wallpaper in sequential order at program startup, and can quickly move forward or back through the sequence, also with sensible options for screen placement and sizing. I fully recommend this program (am using Win7). |

It really is upon Notepad, and is an extremely versatile replacement for that and a whole lot more. |

Color Picker |

An extremely handy tiny utility for picking colours from anywhere on the screen for use of the associated colour code in, say, a web page colour setting. I have stuck with Color Picker over the years because it is so small and unobtrusive and yet does all |

Very handy utility for doing a very small job on the desktop - setting the appearance of the desktop icons and their text labels in Windows XP. In fact, although not written for Vista, the program works just fine for me in Vista, and it has enabled me to |

Excellent little system-tray program for notifying me of new e-mail that's arrived on the server. Can't fault it. |
